Finally coming out of hibernation here, and I thought I would wake everyone else up with this message. I hope that all of you "car guys and gals" have managed to keep warm and healthy through the cold winter, and have all your projects well under way for the approaching summer — yes I'm optimistic. Judy and I stayed home through most of the cold, but just got back from 2 weeks on Vancouver Island. We hit it lucky, and enjoyed sunny skies and (at least) above zero temperatures right up to the last day, when it started back raining. Looked at an '83 Mustang convertible out there, but shipping would have made it too expensive. Great place to buy cars, though — no rotted frames or panels.
First, a recap of last fall. Our last "cruise" of the year was a BBQ at Annicinabe Park. The weather was cool and rainy, but we had a good turnout, and a good time. The club met at the Comfort Inn on Thursday, Nov. 06, 2008. We decide to stay out of any official capacity at the Harbourfest car show in 2009, but noted that members are encouraged to volunteer and help out. We received the Treasurer's Report, and noted that we had some members last year who forgot to pay their dues. We also moved to donate $500.00 to the Miracle Marathon. The Christmas dinner was a success, with about 28 or 29 people attending. As always, we collected toys and food items, which went right to the Salvation Army.
I have reserved the Comfort Inn again for our first meeting of the year, as it is too early to stand around behind our cars.
It's snowing today, so it seems like a good time to spread a litle "sunshine". Our meeting on March 05 was well attended. Enough people struggled out through the cold and snow to make it interesting.
First up was elections, and both Irene Harder and Mike Tooke agreed to stand for re-election, so thanks to both for continuing on.
We had a long discussion regarding our regular Wednesday night cruise. Johnny K indicated that he would like to step back this year, as he was overloaded with things last year; and wants this summer to kick back a bit, and catch up with his own projects. Johnny has approached Mark Sissons, who has agreed to help out with coordinating things.
We also decided to move our meeting place off the highway, and are going to meet at A&W. I have since approached Randy Nickel, and he is delighted to have us. A&W continues to support the old car hobby, and are planning even more events this year. Randy and I agreed that the club can use the grass area, as we have in the past, and keep our cars separate from the public. He has also agreed to highlight the club on his radio ads, and invite all other old car owners to come out and join us. Hopefully, this will have some positive results, and help us to rebuild our membership. So this summer will see a return to more static shows, and fewer cruises. The cruises that we do organise will start and/or finish at the 'Dub.
We have been requested to join the Lake of the Woods Armed Forces Day parade on Saturday, June 06; and have gladly accepted the invitation. I just received a letter from Carol Davis, who invites us to the Keewatin July 01 parade also. I will write back to her and let her know we'll be there. Last years was a great success — Carol says we had 27 cars and bikes!
The World of Wheels show is on in Winnipeg this weekend, so I will pick up our MAAC calendars while I'm there.
We decided not to have an April meeting, as there is not much to discuss, but if it's nice, I may just go over to the A&W to jumpstart the season. I've got my '78 King Cobra roadworthy again — after ripping out some wiring and redoing the cold air intake this winter. Started it yesterday, and it runs good. Now for the battery relocation and then some weatherstripping. Never ends!!!
That about covers it, so see you at the 'Dub!
